Transformation of the Everyday

21 September 2020

Variable Matter has emerged after 15-years of playful design-led practice that has reimagined public spaces and audience engagement. Over the years these projects began to develop a similar thread, shifting how we view ourselves and our environments.

Much of this work was made with an ensemble of incredible creative and community partners. We built projects with ethical and social responsibility into the fabric of the work, creating powerful exchanges of creativity, reflection and transformation. Over the past three years, the studio developed into its current form, meetings with artistic associates mapped the territory, letting ideas develop naturally. In a world of fast paced change, it was liberating to allow ideas to percolate, to find where best to focus our energies and to question emergent conversations on climate and social justice. 2020 has reshaped the way we all do things.

Now more than ever it feels right that Variable Matter becomes part of accelerating the change needed in the world. As a studio we will lead on developing our own work – ambitious public events that place people at the heart of the process – but we want to apply our creative thinking more broadly. As a collective we will work in partnership with those who share our values to commission new activities and artistically driven situations that offer bold, imaginative events, to create meaningful exchanges. We want to inject our own collaborative approach to working more closely with businesses, brands, local authority, charities and cultural institutions to develop ideas in partnership. We have the capacity to work across scales, from small social interventions to ambitious architectural events. We place co-creation at the centre of our work – together we can make the change that is needed to truly enrich our environments.
